Evaluate questions about the advantages of using a digital transmission and storage of information.
Clarification Statement: Examples of advantages could include that digital information is stable because it can be stored reliably in computer memory, transferred easily, and copied and shared rapidly. Disadvantages could include issues of easy deletion, security, and theft.
COSMOS concepts to be used for the lab Noise in transmission has more effect on transmission of analog information than on digital information.
K12 Educational Goals (How the educational goals are achieved through teaching using the experiment, how the topic is connected to the COSMOS concepts used) Students use GnuRadio to observe the digital transmission and analog transmission of music. They evaluate the advantage of digital music based on their observations. There are ways to make correction to the digital signals. There is no way to make correction to analog signals with noise.
Short Description and Walk-through of the experiment Students will listen to a music file in the digital transmission where noise level is set to zero. Students will also listen to the analog transmission where there is noise.
Testbed mapping of the experiment Analog can be approximated with a digital transmission that uses a large number of symbols. Digital should provide clearer transmission. "Analog" transmission is examined on a testbed.
